Walk Alongside, Support Local Solutions
Areas of Impact
We at the Uplift Travel Foundation are proud to stand alongside community leaders and activists working to address the locally identified needs of rural Kenya, and we’re humbled by the good works we have become part of through involvement with local visionaries in our key areas of impact.
They are:
Access to Education
Every person deserves access to education — regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, distance or any other factor. Some of our earliest connections in rural Kenya helped provide support for teachers and school buildings, tuition and supply money for girls, orphans and displaced youth as well as learning opportunities for widows seeking self-reliance.
Cultural Connection
Travel with us is not the same as tourism. Yes, you will have the opportunity to see iconic views and animals on safari; however, there is so much more to what we do. Uplift is all about the exchange of ideas — sharing space with wonderful friends and neighbors across the regions we partner in, seeing the people there and sharing a deep, meaningful cultural connection.
Empowering Women and Girls
Whether it is to provide locally made sanitary kits and education to address period poverty and stigma, or actively combatting the system of forced marriage and genital mutilation, we are proud to join our efforts with community partners and local heroes working to empower women and girls every day.
Food and Water Security
Garden projects that use permaculture and tower structures to combat drought and provide food throughout the year, simple water collection systems with connected tanks that harvest rainwater and help keep human supply separate from livestock are just some of the projects we partner with to help improve food and water security in the region.
Local and Small Business Support
Coming alongside existing efforts with goals of empowerment and sustainability are significant parts of our travel ethos. That includes support for crafters, farmers, lodge keepers, jewelry makers, rangers and other entrepreneurs we’ve met along the way. When we help lift up local business, we lift up families and communities and the Mara as a whole.
Wildlife Conservation
Joining in ongoing efforts with those already addressing human and wildlife conflict in the region means work with safari guides, rangers, elephant keepers and other wildlife activists. Working to protect the interests of animals living in one of many national parks and the local villages with people living right alongside — and reduce harm caused by inevitable encounters.
